Rewa Sujani
A registered brand of the Shree Bharuch District Sujani Production & Sales Cooperative Society, carrying forward a double-cloth weaving technique found nowhere else in the world.
Two fabrics, one loom, not a single needle.
Sujani is a rare style of quilt weaving unique to Bharuch. Two layers of cloth are woven at the same time on a single handloom, interlocked at fixed intervals so that pockets form naturally between them.
Those pockets are hand-filled with cotton, and the two fabrics are intermingled together as the quilt takes shape. No needle ever touches the piece — the entire structure comes from the weave itself. This technique isn't produced anywhere else in the world.
Sujani is believed to trace back to Hafiz Gulam Hussain, wrongly exiled to the Andaman & Nicobar Islands over the 1857 mutiny. In jail, he learned to weave double fabric — and on his return to Bharuch, he refined it into the cotton-filled Sujani quilt we know today. Kings and Nawabs once commissioned it in advance as a gift for celebrations.
